what is gundam?

what makes a gundam a "Gundam" is arbitrary. Gundams are a type of mobile suits that are of:

mobile suits are the term for huge space robots that humans can pilot in space. it's hard to fully define the definition of a Gundam since the universe encompasses multiple shows where these mobile suits possess different technological characteristics. besides the usual shock from bystanders of a Gundam appearance and its iconic facemask, Gundams serve different roles depending on the plot of the story.

ok, but what was the first gundam about?

Gundam first appeared in the 1979 "mobile Suit Gundam" show where it stood as a figure of the Earth Federation in the conflict against the Principality of Zeon. seems pretty straightforward? not really. while Zeon was seemed to be the antagonist here, the story showcases the corruption of the Earth Federation and its discrimination towards space civilians which created the Zeon's push for secession and self-autonomy from Earth. think of every colony that gets in a civil war to avoid paying taxes and do their old thing (think of Great Britan and the USA). while Zeon appears to be extreme in action, the 1979 show paints a landscape of death, genocide, and ambiguity throughout the span of the One Year War (or the Zeonic Conflict for Independence) which wiped out 5.9 billion people. this left the world with 5.4 billion, less than half of the pre-war population.

besides the depressing vibes of this show, the Gundam was iconic in being the one superior technology over the Zeon's mobile suits. very few of them exist which honestly made its role in the show very significant. and in the real world, a goofy but dope looking concept that would create a plethora of buildable toys that is still hip and popular to this day. if anything, the toys singlehandedly cemented Gundam as a long-lasting franchise with fuck-you money to do anything with the name.

kind of got off-track but please remember two things. the original Gundam is the OG of mech anime. and every fucking Gundam story is full of complicated interlocking subplots.

NOW, the first Gundam suit is the RX-78-2 Gundam. the 2 stands for being the second of the three Gundam prototypes created. what happened to the first one? No fuckin idea but this RX-78-2 was piloted by Amuro Ray, the main protagnist throughout this show. just look at the beauty

now what is there to talk about Gundam?

like said before, Gundam covers multiple universes with multiple stories. books, mangas, shows, movies -- are a few of many ways you're going to be able to digest anything of this franchise. the best way to navigate through this everything, everwhere all at once bullshit is to understand how the franchise organizes these universes. not including all of them but these are the main ones to check out:

afterthoughts

don't get overwhelmed by everthing this franchise has to offer. while I recommend watching the Universal Century stuff, any of these universes still encapsulates the central message of war, politics, and humanity. just please, if you get confused by any of these, check out the non-watchable shit Gundam offers. the Gundam figurines are popular for a reason. check out online or your nearest anime merch store. they honestly look so cool as decorations for your room or any place in your living space. hopefully this clusterfuck of explaining Gundam is helpful.
