all shovel knight pictures and media: yacht club games's creative commons 4.0
build
built with 11ty (still in progress)
font in use: system-ui artworks: shovel knight :)
previously with html and css mostly but with 11ty, a bit of js and md
goals:
run more - slowly shift away from lifting iron and enabling myself the cardio for other athletic activities and fuckin life
more games - can't be a gaming nerd without catching up on indies and shit that i keep dreaming out. plus, games are way cheaper than a lot of things i waste money on
decorate my room - pretty self-explanatory here. one or two gundams and smiskis are not going to do. plus my room setup looks like a barebone study room which will not do
tattoo, draw, and art more same as games, i can't be stopping these shit when i finally have a room to do things beside sleeping. plus tattoos right now are extremely expensive
wip posts (all on this page for shits and giggles):
figurines (draft)
how do people get into warhammer and gundam miniatures?
it's so interesting how these same figurines used to be completely shitted on. or even anime figurines. going at it with non-existent data, but it seems like the nerdy shit has transcended to mainstream in other forms.
i've been raving about those cute miffy or smiski figurines that keeps getting emptied at stores. so aesthetically compatitible with any kind of bedroom setup. however, when i was building out my friend's gundam, the parallel popped up in my mind.
why have i not been delving into these figurines? i have some money now and it's not like i can only indulge in these via $7.99/month streaming subscription or torrented games.
do we change? (draft)
kind of realized that our core selves never really change.
tonight, i caught up with a couple of hs friends. well, not sure what qualifies as such since it's been 2017 for some of them.
since my departure from texas, i thought that my mindset would be completely transformed. a different person with a different life.
however, during the dinner (unfortunately, hometown thai food ain't it), one of my friends kept going:
"dude, i miss him being like this. this is ****."
weird that i'm realizing this but we don't really change from the core. my current issues and successes? they're essentially just myself finding the ability to enhance or minimize certain aspects of my ownself. 2017 me is the same as 2024 me without the teenage angst and experience that i have now.
i'm not exactly a genius psychaitrist or spiritual guru but it's hard to accept this revelation. maybe more self-reflection will help with better understanding myself? or perhaps writing more could be a sufficient option?
i feel like this is something that needs to be shared more amongst people (i'm projecting) that are looking to change their life for the better. perhaps it's not about molding ourselves into the typical success story but mroe of finding how we can manifest from our own liking. or that to better understand people, assuming that drastic personality change is a deviation from one's true self perhaps is the wrong pov versus understanding what one's core self brought upon a major shift in one's life.
exhausted but have to look back on this to rationalize what i came to realize.
animation - jpn vs western (draft)
- histories of western and japanese are very intertwined
- it's interesting because the view of cartoon between the two now is drastically different
besides animation movies and adult-oriented cartoons, animation is looked upon as a lesser medium in the US
-
the funding is not there
-
even for hits like invincible, season 2's animation was not crazy good
- and arcane was powered by the sheer wealth riot game has from league
-
there are a shift in momentum though with x-men 97 and even "children" movies like puss n' boots and spiderverse gaining mainstream popularity
-
like western animation has superb writing but trapped in the medium of children-audience
- early steve universe
- adventure time
- hilda
- avatar the last airbender
- crazy as it can objectively is oen of the best shows but people brush it off because one, it originated from nickoldeon and that brandname still sticks even on any streaming service
there is a push for more mature animation:
- infinity train
- arcane
- castelvania
- legend of vox machina
- bojack the horseman (but that was trapped with being originally an adult humour cartoon)
- over the garden wall
regardless, it would be hard to shake the anime elitism just because the amount of mangas, light novels, and animes is as many as people trying to make it big on social media.
also western animation used to be very much about creating surreal shots and character design while anime focus on motion.
not saying that western animation doesn't have that but with a medium budget, western focuses much more on stylization to support storytelling.
studio trigger (draft)
-
unique animation / direction initially
- felt almost like adult swim esque
- eventually settled to a more standard anime studio
- but flashes of quirkiness
-
plots?
- not the craziest or groundbreaking ones (beside maybe kill la kill)
- biggest weakness
- not the craziest or groundbreaking ones (beside maybe kill la kill)
-
shows/movies (watched):
- little witch academia (movies & tv show)
- kill la kill
- inferno cop
- star war visions episode
- cyberpunk - partially
- delicious in dungeon
-
weirdly enough, trigger doesn't have the best record for original plots, but famous for the fuckin animation
-
shows/movies (not watched):
- darling in the franx
- BNA
- gridman
- sex and violence
- promare
reddit excerpt:
- studio trigger peaked with its first project kill al kill
- cursed to live under gainax's shadow
- had some success with little witch academia
- ditf was suppose to be the next gurren laggan but mid af
- cyberpunk was the comeback for the studio
- dungeon meshi is the first complete adaption the studio has
ever done
- which is huge because trigger can focus on everything outside of the story
- this is uncharted waters/territory for trigger
but fuck the seen where kill la kill challenges the student leader in the first episode was so epic and funny af as she gets aboslutely clapped.
it always fucks me up watching all of the shows they've made. despite all of them being crazy different, the thumbprints are still seen everywhere - such a huge range, it's so strongly recognizable
kill la kill is interesting. it is oversexualized to a steroid level. it can be hard to view from an initial standpoint but weirdly, it's used as an overarching plot device for empowerment despite how tantalizing it can be. it's a statement on nudity (and you can see it with the male cast as well). perhaps the plot device could have been better done but i've never seen another example of trying to go beyond the typical anime girl fetishization so i can't really defend nor argue against it? weiredly, the women in the show are badass af, super dynamic, and powerful af. the overall message about body positivity clashes quite a bit with trigger's reliance on fan service tropes
digress though because studio trigger's animation is top-tier af and a decent plot is all that's needed (cyberpunk mid but has a huge cult following).
but excited to see dungeon meshi being the venture that trigger will be taking.
